About The Canyon

The Canyon at Tarras Vineyards is the vision of local kiwi, Hayden Johnston. Originally from Dunedin and of Ngāi Tahu descent, Hayden bought the land in 2002 and planted the vineyard. In 2016 he started on a new journey to create a stunning world class events space on a very special location above the vineyard, beside a dramatic rocky canyon with breathtaking views of the mountains and Upper Clutha Valley.

The History

Alongside Tarras Vineyards, Hayden owns KURU KURU wines. The inspiration comes from Hayden’s 4th great grandmother, Kuru Kuru (Ngāi Tahu), who lived on Rakiura (Stewart Island) with her husband Captain James Joss from Banff in Scotland.

The family origins inspired Kuru Kuru wines, with each bottle of KURU KURU proudly displaying her moko kauae, the mark carved on her chin, signalling her respected position in Māori society. The iconic painting presiding over The Canyon venue is a symbol of Kuru Kuru, honouring her mana together with a carving of her in the centre of Te Rau Aroha Marae in Bluff.

The story

THE HISTORY, THE VIEW THE PLACE.

The Canyon's main building, once The Nose restaurant, was relocated 25km from Highlands Motorsport Park near Cromwell. Its curved design blends into the landscape, featuring recycled materials, a natural wastewater system, and a repurposed cinema.

Getting its name from the dramatic canyon next to the function centre The Canyon provides a large space with an intimate feel for a multitude of events. It boasts connected spaces, with the theatre, entrance barrel, restaurant building and large outdoor terrace. The quality built, elegant fixtures, furniture and decor connects and merges beautifully with the natural surroundings.
